Dick earned his first national win at the Peoria TT in 1959. Within four years he had posted five podium finishes and in 1963, won his first AMA Grand National Championship. He helped pioneer the sport of motocross in the United States and was one of the few riders to race on the national level in dirt track, road racing, and motocross. His most rewarding national win occurred in 1970, when he rode the new Honda CB750 to victory at the Daytona 200 -- earning Honda's first win at an AMA National. Upon winning his second AMA Grand National Championship at 37, Dick became the oldest rider in the series to win the title. Upon retirement in 1974, he had raced in over 230 AMA Nationals and recorded 24 victories. In 1995 he received the AMA Dudley Perkins Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Association, and signed his portrait at Daytona in 2001.
