In 1996, Davey made history with his back-to-back, Springfield Mile wins over the Labor Day weekend in Springfield, Illinois. In the history of the sport, only one other man has won two Grand National championships in the same weekend at the same track. He won the 883 Grand National title the following year with seven national victories and 11 podium finishes. In 1999, Davey, 29, was killed in a multi-rider crash during a heat race as the DuQuoin Mile began.
