Born in Santa Cruz, California, Russ entered his first race -- a 100-mile hare scrambles -- at nine years old. While riding a 250cc Greeves against Dick Mann in 1965, he won the Grand Prix at the age of 18 and later raced in the first motocross held in the United States. Sponsored by Husqvarna in 1969, he raced with the Husky team in Europe for two years and upon his return, became a Suzuki rider. Russ founded the first motocross racing schools in the United States with help from Suzuki and has trained thousands of racers.
