By age 13 Jim had competed in hare scrambles, hill climbs, flat track, and motocross. He rode as a privateer on a Bultaco in 1972, finishing 5th in the 500cc championship. Selected to the first AMA team to the Motocross des Nations, he raced in Europe for two seasons and was the first "non-European" to win trophies at the event. Jim received the AMA Most Popular MX Rider Award in 1973 and continued to race in the world championships in Europe for three more years. He won the first indoor supercross in 1974. Jim finished 7th in the world championships in 1975 and 4th the following year. After switching to Honda in 1977, he finished that season 2nd overall in supercross and 3rd in the 250cc series. He ended 1978 in 5th place. Jim retired from racing in 1980 and later founded a successful riding school. He was killed in 2006.
