In 1924, Jim won the first national race authorized by the AMA -- the 25-mile AMA National championship. As a rider for the Harley-Davidson and Indian racing teams, he scored 21 such titles. During the 1928 season -- his best -- he won six national titles and was recognized as the overall AMA National Champion. Jim posted his final win in 1930 but remained a top competitor for five more years. For his contributions to the sport, Jim received the AMA Dudley Perkins Award, the association's top honor. On display at the AMA museum, Jim signed this portrait in 1999 and died the following year at 103.
